A 6.2 magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of Papua New Guinea. This is reported today, February 9, by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The earthquake occurred off the coast of New Britain Island in Papua New Guinea. The quake was recorded at 6:04 UTC time 122 miles south of the town of Kokopo. The focus of the earthquake was 31.3 kilometers deep. To date, no information has been received on casualties or destruction. The threat of a tsunami was not announced. It is worth noting that earthquakes in this region are not uncommon. The fact is that Papua New Guinea is located in the Pacific Fire Ring area of a powerful tectonic fault with very high seismic activity.
