The earthquake occurred off the coast of New Britain Island in Papua New Guinea. The quake was recorded at 6:04 UTC time 122 miles south of the town of Kokopo. The focus of the earthquake was 31.3 kilometers deep. To date, no information has been received on casualties or destruction. The threat of a tsunami was not announced.
