German government does not recognize Lukashenko's legitimacy


The legitimacy of Alexander Lukashenko as president of Belarus will not be recognized by Germany, the official representative of the German government Steffen Seibert said on September 23. Commenting on the inauguration of Lukashenko, which was prepared secretly and held without public participation, Seibert said: And after this ceremony, Mr. Lukashenko cannot count on democratic legitimacy. The German representative expressed the point of view of Berlin, according to which the elections in Belarus were not democratic. He also pointed to methods of suppressing protests in Belarus, referring from the category of cruel violence against peaceful demonstrators. The German representative also explained that Berlin requires Minsk to release political prisoners and stop torture in prisons. As previously reported by the news agency, a number of Western countries did not recognize the inauguration of Lukashenko, which took place today, September 23.
